Compressed Air System Tech Tips

Know Your Compressor Fluid And Its Condition

Like the blood in your body, the fluid in your compressor is vital and performs multiple critical functions. And, like your blood, you should have it tested periodically to check for a few things.

What does the fluid do?

1. Provides lubrication to bearings in the air end. This is pretty straightforward and broadly understood. Rotating equipment and bearings require lubrication to run smoothly.

2. Carries heat created in the compression process to the heat exchanger/cooler so that it can be transferred, whether by water or air.

3. Takes part in the actual compression process. The fluid in the air end closes the clearance between the rotors to aid in compression.

What will sampling and analyzing the fluid tell me?

-You will know the condition and remaining life of the fluid. Continued operation at higher than normal temperature can dramatically reduce fluid life.

-Is there water in the fluid? That might indicate the compressor is running lightly loaded.

-If there are wear metals in the fluid? You may have a failing air end.

-If there is a high level of contamination or particulates, you may need to look at inlet filtration.

-How is the acid level? Environmental conditions may cause premature fluid failure.

Analyzing your fluid can tell you quite a bit about the condition of your compressor, not just the fluid. It is a simple and effective means to proactively protect your investment and avoid repairs and downtime!
