Distribution piping is often over-looked when considering the compressed air system. Undersized piping results in elevated pressure loss and increased power cost while simultaneously preventing the plant from having the needed system pressure.

Moisture in compressed air will corrode black iron pipe, often requiring the implementation of point-of-use filtration, with the associated costs of acquisition, maintenance and additional pressure loss. Plastic piping has been utilized in the past, and some plastic materials are suitable for compressed air. However, the use of PVC or CPVC is prohibited by OSHA as the materials become brittle and may explode, potentially injuring plant personnel.
