Contact: Mr. Jeff Gee Title: Maintenance Manager Product: Automotive Connecting Rods
Metaldyne manufactures engine connecting rods for the automotive and truck engine industry. Production at this plant requires an uninterrupted volume of airflow and consistent pressure. The process is critical when ensuring consistency and quality of the final product. IAC/PTG was asked to conduct an air audit to determine a base line for the existing compressed air system and to determine if excess capacity existed.
Audit Findings
The plant was operating at an average of 95 psig.
Pressure swings in the plant of approximately 13 psig.
Air compressors were load sharing
Recommendations
Install a flow controller.
Add additional storage.
Benefits
Stabilized air pressure within 2 psig.
Reduced power cost.
Lowered plant operating pressure from 95 psig to 82 psig.
Reduced material costs and reworks.
Note: Due to product demand, Metaldyne now is now in the process of upgrading their compressed air system. They are currently adding a 400 HP two-stage rotary screw compressor, more storage, and a 6000 cfm flow controller.
